A little bit of history...

Words by National Champion, Tiffany Hensley

* * *

Originating at the foot of Mt Blanc, Simond has been providing the ultimate climbing gear for nearly a century-and-a-half, saving the lives of alpinists, ice climbers & sport climbers with the latest technology in ice-picks, crampons and basically everything else a climber could put in his gear bag. Fact is, Simond released the first entirely metallic ice axe in the early 70's and the first ever concave ice axe later on.

Naturally, the other companies quickly followed...

THE STORY OF SIMOND hails back to the beginning and daring exploration of mountaineering. With the discovery of Chamonix by the English, ice axes were first invented with the same amount of elegance and finesse as the earliest pitons: none.

In 1860, in an effort to revolutionize gear to the point where it was as light and well-balanced as the climbers themselves, François Simond began to dedicate his career to the conception, invention and realization of mountaineering equipment.

After 147 years, Simond is still a family business. Ludger Simond, third-generation chairman and general manager of the company, continues the work of his grand grandfather in the pursuit of gear that is as flawless as it is beautiful. The factory is located in the Chamonix Valley, world capital of Alpinism.

Since pioneering the way to modern and innovative designs in the early years of mountaineering, Simond has grown into one of the top-five gear companies in the world - always there to push the limits in extreme metal-forge technology and even participate in the most daring heli-rescues on the infamous Chamonix Mt Blanc mountain chain.

But incredibly busy shipping millions of carabiners and other revolutionary ice and mountain tools around the world, Europe's finest gear manufacturer totally overlooked a major player:
